About Bhoto Jatra
Every year at the last day of Rato Matschendranath Chariot Festival, a bhoto decorated with ornaments is shown and asked whom does it belongs to. Newar community of Lalitpur district conducts this festival every year with the intention to find out the owner of bhoto. Here is a myth about this festival :
Once upon a time, in Tou Daha of Kathmandu valley there lived a beatiful couple of nags. Naagraj was the head of community whereas his fiance was Nagdevi.
Once Nagdevi suffered from severe eye pain. So in order to heal this problem Nagraj called a famous Vaidya to his palace. Vaidya agreed and entered into Tau Daha without any hesitation.
He prepared medicine and put on the eye of Nagdevi. Amazingly, medicine healed the pain. Delighted Nagraj gave Vaidya a lot of ornaments along with a diamond coated Bhoto.
Vaidya was amused by Nagraj's gift. He used to wear his Bhoto in festive season every now and then. All the person who used to see this Bhoto used to get jealous of it.
It was the month of Shraawan and Vaidya was moving on the Rato Matschendranath Chariot Festive which then used to be conducted by the king of Lalitpur. Every creature along with ghosts used to come see this journey. Seeing Vaidya's bhoto a ghost got very much jealous.
Jealous ghost then stole the Bhoto from Vaidya when he was busy in planting crops. When Vaidya noticed that his Bhoto was gone, he was too upset. So, he ran from here to there and so on.
He knew that all of the creatures used to see the chariot festive so he went there. At a glance he noticed his Bhoto. But, ghost used to appear - disappear every now and then.
With a lot of effort he caught the ghost and grabbed his Bhoto and tried to snatch it. Seeing it the king of that time tried to stop them and took the Bhoto and said "I will give my decision on the last day of Jatra."
Hearing this both were satisfied and went home. So, at last day the king asked whom did it belong to. But, both Vaidya and ghost were abducted. Hence, the system of Bhoto Jatra is continued till now. But, as there is no king currently, the head of the state does it along with head of Guthi.
This time it was Bidya Devi Bhandari.
